Adrienne Dawes

Casta

To support the research and development of Casta, an original performance piece by Adrienne Dawes exploring mixed-race identity in the visual culture of 18th century casta paintings. Casta paintings were a unique genre of portraiture that depicted different racial mixtures arranged according to a hierarchy of race and status. The artist will continue research and development of Casta by studying casta paintings in México and Spain, exploring the history of Africans in México, and workshopping a new draft of the script for a staged reading/performance in Austin, TX.
