Milta Ortiz

Sanctuary

To support the rehearsal and performance process for Sanctuary, a new play by Milta Ortiz. Sanctuary is based on Tucson’s Sanctuary movement, which was launched in 1982 by activist and attorney Margo Cowan, Quaker and folklorist Jim Corbett, and Reverend John Fife of Southside Presbyterian Church. The movement was inspired by the stories of Salvadoran refugees in INS detention centers. Margo Cowan initially discovered the detained Salvadorans and began political asylum proceedings. She enlisted Fife and Corbett before publicly claiming sanctuary in 1982, which ultimately ignited a national movement. Sanctuary will be developed and disseminated with collaborative partners Borderlands Theater, the Southside Presbyterian Church, and HowlRound.
